Boxed Living

It’s time again my friends for my “I’m way too lazy to post detail descriptions of my recent purchases so I’ll take photos of my room instead” post! I would have done this sooner but you know me and laziness are perfect bed buddies. You can thank tsubaki of Anime Desho Desho? for making me move my lazy butt for once

The Short of it is…

I get bored. A lot. I contribute this because I lack the ability to go out and be like, social plus four years of working on my bumming-ness is hard to give up. In that avenue, I reformatted the older laptop I use to remote into at work to do stuff and made it a server of sorts. I say “of sorts” since I’m still using the laptop to download anime and do work-related activities, plus the version of Windows 2003 server I got may expire in about 60 days mattering if I applied the right patches correctly.
This really doesn’t mean anything to most folks but I think it’s kind of cool to do. Anyway, I dubbed the reformatted laptop server Rena of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, though the user account I use is Yuki of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. This is what I see when I log into Rena. Prettty cool but random huh? I would have used a Rena wallpaper but I couldn’t find any good ones at 1280×1024, which is the size I set the remote login to use. If anyone has any good ones, let me know as I’m always on the look out for wallpapers!
So what will I do with Rena? No clue but thanks to Omni who was my guinea pig tester, I at least know Rena works fine as a web and FTP server. I figure if anything, I may try to develop some type of site or experiement with various server-related software. I know one project I would really like to do is create some type of e-commerce site that would be a small side business of sorts. I’m probably getting ahead of myself though, so we’ll see how long that will take to actually do (if I ever start).
I think one awesome thing about having your own server is accessability. For example, Omni uploaded some manga for me on the server. Sounds kind of pointless right? Yes it was but it did save both of us time as there was no middleman, i.e. he uploading to another server like rapidshare and then me downloading it. Saves a lot of time, I can tell you that! Odds are I’ll be using the FTP side a lot as it’ll save time if I ever wanted people to send stuff my way without having to re-download it. Also on my end it’ll be like I’m downloading straight from them! Or alternatively, I can just drag and drop any files onto Rena that I need to give people without hassling with actually uploading them. Sure it’ll be slower for the people downloading since my upload cap is 40-50kb/s but as I mentioned previously, it’ll save a lot of time on both ends. Even better is if I’m away from the computer or actually out, I can easily access Rena and upload any files that I got and will need later on without having to re-download them again when I get home!
Yes, I basically wasted my weekend creating a server for personal, convenient, and lazy use. Thus is the way of moyism.
