Wii GET

11/19/2006

I got the Wii today for no apparent reason. Seriously.

The prequel of my misadventure of obtaining a Wii today will probably bore most folks, so I’ll just say it was with a “going with the flow” mentality that had me and two of my friends camping out at our local Toys R Us at 5AM for the Wii. Basically we just came back from a random day in NYC and decided to check out how bad the lines were for the Wii since it was already 4-5AM and we were still up. At the time, if we did end up camping out for a Wii, I was on the fence whether to keep or sell it. Unlike the PS3, there’s very little profit to be made in selling the Wii on Ebay and honestly I just didn’t want to deal with the hassle. My other friend, however, solely wanted to make the quick buck and used the third bud as another body to get a second Wii. Yet he wanted me to sell his Wiis on ebay for him since he doesn’t have the time. Yes, his job is a killer but hey man I’m not going to do the hard work and deal with ebay if my friend is the one making all the profit.

Anyway, lazy money-making friends aside, we ended up camping out at Toys R Us around 5AM where there were only 7 people in line. This compared to Circuit City that only had 17 Wiis with the line already looking full and Best Buy with a line curving all the way towards the back. Crazy that Toys R Us was so empty but then again, Best Buy I heard opened early (7-8AM) versus Toys R Us (10AM) so BB’s line was sort of understandable. Really not much happened waiting in line as our line neighbors were pretty cool and all of us “hardcore” folks (the guys who were first arrived at like 3AM) just tried to stay awake and not freeze our asses off. The “real” excitement didn’t happen until actual daybreak and hearing about the various Wii availability at other stores several hours later.

I think around 6-7AM was when the line really got long as people trying to make a quick buck but not willing to wait it out in the cold like a true master started to arrive. Also the spill over from Best Buy of the people whom couldn’t get the Wii really helped extend the line a bit. Around this point we also had vague numbers of all the local stores availability from other folks: Circuit City 17, Best Buy 120, Target 80, and Toys R Us 86. Around 9-9:30AM, employees finally came out and started to hand out tickets; everything pretty orderly and nothing like the insaneness of PS3′s launch day. Before going in and actual getting the Wii, I do remember one kid who didn’t make the cut tried to offer any of us in the front line to trade our place (and basically the Wii) for the Zelda game. Yes, just the Zelda game. Insert your own jokes here but much to say, the kid has a lot to learn about supply and demand and having better bargaining skills.

Between being out in the cold for 5 hours and anything below my chest starting to ache, I was more than happy when Toys R Us started to let people in at its 10AM opening. I’ll admit there was a little madness getting the Wii accessories and games, but more or less everything went smoothly. Since I couldn’t go crazy, only picked up a secondary remote (plus the nun chunk since it seems like a set) and Zelda: Twilight Princess. I think if I had more time, I would have gone through the games more, as now I’m on the fence of going back sometime this week to pick up two more games (Trauma Center and Marvel Ultimate Alliance). Anyway the grand total for this random idea and purchase came to like $385USD, which a little pricey in general is still a hell of a lot cheaper than getting the PS3. What really killed the cost for me was getting the extra controller set as that cost $60USD ($40 for the remote and $20 for the nun chunk)! When did controllers get so darn expensive?!

Eventually made it home safely at 11AM-12PM working on zero sleep and being up for over 24 hours straight. Of course, I set up the Wii immediately and tested to make sure it worked. Seemed pretty good though I wasn’t impressed with the graphics that much (the extra features like being backwards compatible with Gamecube plus SD and WiFi were nice pluses though). The setup was pretty easy though getting used to using the remote controller took awhile. I really tested the baby out a few hours later after some sleep, thoroughly enjoying the Wii Sports disc included with the system with my younger bro. Crazy how sensitive the controller/sensor bar is as playing the various sports games felt like you were actually doing them (to an extent). The tennis portion was my personal favorite out of Wii Sports as I was jumping around like an idiot trying to re-enact some Prince of Tennis moves though I’ve never played tennis in my life. For Zelda, I haven’t put too much time into it yet (only about an 1 1/2 hour) but seems pretty good so far. I have to admit the fishing section was interesting plus moving the remote like a sword for Link to do the same was pretty awesome. Oh, I renamed Link and his horse Kyon and Mikuru respectively for kicks and giggles ;)

Watching my younger brother and his friend play (the friend came over ASAP once he heard I bought it), the Wii is really impressing me even though I didn’t give it much thought until actually buying it. I honestly don’t think I have ever had this much fun (nor worked up such a sweat) while playing a game console for such a short period of time. Nintendo did right in making their next generation console more interactive and family/group friendly as I just can’t see myself or others having as much fun as I did on the Wii on other consoles like PS3. Don’t get me wrong, I’m probably getting a PS3 down the line once all the bugs are worked out and its cheaper, but I’m simply more impressed at how well and quickly the Wii has grown on me since I did zero research on the console and wasn’t initially interested in it.

Now I just have to wait for my projector, a sentence I’ve been saying over and over again in all my recent entries, so I can enjoy some crazy 76″ Zelda ACTION!

I beg to differ. The apparent reason was to further your financial damages, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

It was a vital addition to the Chruch of Moy, I’m sure.

Tell us how it works out for you at the moment I am have decided gainst the PS3 for the immediate future and am opting for a Wii and 360 instead. Alas I am not sure which to get first since while Zelda seems like +60 hours of fun, Gears of War and Halo 3 look awesome. I assume of course that this Wii console that you have is going to undergo some sort of customization yes?

grats on the purchase, money is there to spend, personally i like to spend it on myself. I for some reason reserved a copy of zelda, which i now have in my posession, but never went about getting the wii, i guess i should get one so the game can be more than a paperweight.

DM, I know. This month has been hell on my finances.

Colin, ha I guess so though I’m not pleased by it. “A vital addition to the Church of Moy” you say… ha.

Crusader, no customization since I don’t plan to fool around with it outside normal use. Probably down the line when there’s more documented methods, but not now.

Salsashark, yea thanks though my empty wallet isn’t as thankful. Considering how impressed I am with the Wii so far, I think this random purchase may have been worth it however.

Oh man, Arin from Pangya. Don’t tell me you play that game too, moy?

Anyways, I was lusting for a Wii too, just because of the Pangya Wii-mote demo video. But it looks very likely the only time I’m going to get Wii is when I engage in a very expensive bidding war against other fellow antique collectors for it….

i was planning on getting it but in the end i decided to wait to see what people thought of it and so far i’ve heard nothing but good things about it. so all i gotta do now is figure out how to get one.

i just wanna say that i named my world of warcraft characters after haruhi characters too. kyon for my lvl 34 druid and nagato for my 40 rogue. i finally broke the mold with my warlock though cuz i made him a male and i didn’t wanna name him itsuki LOL.

Ya, the Wii is fun. My arms are still sore from boxing my sister ~~. I had to scramble for an extra remote and nunchunk cause for some reason they almost ran out by the time I got to the counter. So suprising that they didn’t make more acessories since all the profits come from those.

Yeah, I’m having a blast with my Wii…it’s even more fun than I initially expected. I’m glad to hear that you’re enjoying yours as well…can Nintendo do no wrong?

Prices have gotten pretty bad when you go to buy an extra controller and it costs you almost as much as a game. The Campers out here in DE really had to endure a lot cause we had a really really bad rainstorm which caused flooding here and there, plus it was cold.

I finally got a wii after searching the stores in my city for three months. I stood in lines for hours and made many phone calls to most of the stores without any luck. I decided to continue my wii search on line and ended up on a wii tracker web site. Their it was, the flashing in stock sign that stated amazon had the wii in stock for its retail price of $250.00.I highly recommend these wii tracker sites if you are trying to find a wii.
