It Came!

6/6/2007

I do many stupid things in life, most of them financial. Most of them have been documented on this blog and most of them occurring ever since I landed a job. Once again my friends, it is time to tell a tale of another financially stupid purchase so we can all come to realize yet again, I am horrible with money in my hands.

So what expensive item did I purchase this time you all ask? Well, while I strive to meet the spending demands of my other (anime) blogging peers, unfortunately I have fell short of such great feats like those of Stripey and Zanza.

No 40″ or 42″ monitor, just a WestingHouse 37″ Wide 1080p Monitor/LCD instead.

As always, click on any images for the full sized version. A photo of my desktop after I moved it in preparation for the new LCD hinted a week or so ago. I will admit, I am going to miss dual LCDs as I started to find having the secondary monitor very convenient at times.

And if one is wondering, I gave my 24″ to my younger brother and will have the 17″ in storage as a backup in case of any emergencies.

The box for the Westy 37″. I heard from my parents that my dad had to help the UPS guy bring it in the house. Not that our UPS guy is weak or anything, but just that the box is that bulky. A good 60+lbs if I’m not mistaken. Taking out and setting up the new LCD was pretty straight forward though I did need my brother’s help in carrying the monitor to my room. It is definitely not a one man job, no matter how strong you may be. The thing is just too big to carry firmly!

The initial setup, just plugging the Westy into my PC to make sure it works. Computer picked it up like a charm and thus started my grinning that did not go away until several hours later ;)

After setting everything back up. As one can probably tell, I did not really plan the purchase too well as my desktop is cramped like heck plus I’m 2-3 feet away from the monitor. Being so close to such a sweet monitor will definitely take some time to get used to.

I haven’t thoroughly tested the monitor yet due to time, but odds are I’ll do more testing as the week and weekend rolls by. The real test I can’t wait to see is when I hook up the PS3 for some true 1080p viewing action! Too bad it is not DVD region free nor my current DVD player being able to do 1080p (only up to 1080i). On watching videos from my computer, all I can is OMFGx10! I couldn’t believe the difference I was seeing, especially those encoded at 720p like Hayate and DARKER THAN BLACK. I think I’m starting to understand why Omni only likes the higher encoded RAWs now.

I guess the only thing I forgot to mention was the reason why I decided to purchase the monitor huh? Especially since I already have the Dell 2407 that I only bought a little under a year ago. Honestly, I partly blame Zanza after the comment he left in one of my previous posts about buying the Dell 2707. I had a half idea of beating or matching him by doing the same and after a quick google search for “Dell 2707″, topics for the WestingHouse 37″ came up first. Curious, I clicked the [H]ard|Forum ones and was amazed by what the users were saying about the monitor; more so since it was on sale at Costco. After debating about it for a few hours (or minutes), I gave in (again) to the devil inside of me and ordered the monitor. And the rest, as they say, is history.

I could go on and on how uber awesome the monitor is but I think from my crappy photos, my gushing comments, and some quick research one will be able to tell just how truly great the WestingHouse 37″ monitor is. I’m just happy I got it at a decent price although I know I’ll be regretting it when I’m legally blind by the age of 30. Meh, I’ll let Future Moy deal with it ;)

I can’t wait to land a job so I can spend my money on stuff like this. Also for a 37″ monitor, the packaging doesn’t look that big to me.

  2. Stripey on 6/6/2007 at 2:36 am

OMG! 37″ 1080p…. Gah! must have cost a limb and may cost you your eyesight too! XD

BUT! Such sacrifices are not worth mentioning compared to the glorious golden anime era that is being ushered into your room.

Hail Moy, King of anime-related purchases!

Well, if I had a job as things are now I would buy a lot more than I do today. A new monitor for my comp would be the first, not 37″ but at least 23-25″

It would be a lot of new stuff comming to me if I had a job. The bad part is that I can´t store it…

So at this point I´m mostly glad I don´t have a job, since I would spend to much since I´m bad with a lot of money…

wth. A 37′ monitor? Where’d you buy this shit? :O

That takes a lot of moolah, I must say…

  5. lanie-emon on 6/6/2007 at 9:42 am

Oh My freaking GOD, that’s awesome. I would kill to see a good encoded Raw on that monitor…I bet Darker than Black would look really awesome on it.

Ronin – think less 37″ monitor, more 37″ HDTV sans the TV tuner. I don’t think the prices on this particular model are too bad, but then I always get jealous of US hardware prices compared to what they charge over here.

In any case, it is a very sweet set – I like the way it makes the mahou shojo Rin figure look small in comparison. I’m also jealous because I don’t have the room for anything bigger than 32″ in here, not to mention the 1080p (though since I do actually use mine as a TV and very rarely hook up the computer, I wouldn’t get much advantage of the later).

I bought the same LCD last year. Great TV for the price I bought it. The only problem I’ve had with it is the HDMI to PS3 flickering I’ve been having.

holy shizzat! damn that’s nice. wish i had the money for that (stupid car accessories :^_^;). i’m planning to get a laptop though, but this may change my mind and stick w/ the old desktop.

  9. moyism on 6/6/2007 at 6:50 pm

Adun, the box is a bit bigger in RL. And on a job, all I can is SAVE SAVE SAVE! Get a somewhat decent nest egg before you go nuts on spending. ’cause you never know what will happen and it’ll suck if you can’t pay off for the load of figures you just preordered… not like I speak from experience or the like… yea… *whistles innocently*

Stripey, I only lost a kidney as suggested by Kabitzin. And yes, it’s all worth it (at least for now) until I go blind. Still doesn’t compare to your 42″ Sony though ;)

manga, yes money in the hands of those with bad money management skills is never a good thing. Just look at me!

Ronin, thank god credit cards and the internet! LMAO

lanie-emon, yes DtB looked FRICKIN’ AWESOME. Period.

DiGiKerot, I always thought yours was around 40″? Anyway, for 1080p doesn’t X360 have the ability to do so? I would imagine id@lmaster looking pretty sweet at 1080p ;)

ollin, ah cool cool. Good to know of a fellow blogger who has the same monitor and enjoys it as well. For the PS3 flickering, I read the PS3 firmware update to 1.8 fixed this. Are you still seeing flickering? This has me a little worry as I plan to hook up my PS3 via HDMI as well but we’ll see.

R8, ah. While the monitor IS great I would advise on getting the laptop personally, but that’s just me. More so if your desktop is “old”. (BTW, sorry for mixing you up with Zanza in my initial comment. Edited this after realizing my mistake)

  12. Zanza on 6/7/2007 at 3:44 am

omg… you crazy sonuvagun… wtf!?!?!?! XD

it is 1:41am as i am typing this. i rubbed my eyes three or four times after clicking on my Moy bookmark. is this real? do my eyes deceive me?

jesus, that is a sweet pickup Moy, i’m jealous. i’ve been lurking in the AVS forums for weeks now, reading up on HTPC’s. anyway, that’s an awesome set up! definitely post a followup entry with more thoughts on this kinda set-up, i’d be very interested in reading about the experience. living vicariously thru Moy, now i gotta think of what my next purchase is. i hate u XD

p.s. i like how i was mentioned twice in this entry. we are both gonna be bankrupt one day -_-;;;; ;)

You should get one of the 1900×1080 torrents of Chevalier from Shinsen Subs, if you want to really see your TV shine. Anime at 1080p is pretty crazy!

  14. Arcueid on 6/7/2007 at 5:17 pm

Hmmm dosnt that hurt your eyes if your too close? same resolution as your old screen but 50% bigger… biiig pixles :P

  15. Arcueid on 6/7/2007 at 5:36 pm

Hmmm looked it up and it seems ok for gaming…. dam i wish i lived in the US, i would order one right away (maby even 2). Damn im jealous…. -.-

  16. moyism on 6/7/2007 at 7:35 pm

bj0rN, screw the duals when I have 37″ of loveliness!

Aesir, a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. If you search my blog I’m pretty positive I told how to configure foobar in one of my replies in comments. Overall, it can be a pain to get “just right” but once you have everything set it’s all good.

Zanza, hahaha I was waiting for your comment dude. Well after a bit more of testing I can say PS3 at 1080p looks helleva sweet. Played some R1 DVDs on the PS3 as well, all looked pretty good with the upscaling. No noticeable ghosting or anything either, if you’re worry about that. And yes, you and I will definitely be bankrupt one day… probably inadvertently by each other’s hands XD

Arcueid, it did initially but I’m getting used to it. And yes, the random bits of gaming I did on the PC and PS3 ran beautifully.

  17. Zanza on 6/7/2007 at 10:41 pm

damn Moy, i return after 8 hrs of sleep to find that no, i was no dreaming. you are one damn crazy otaku XD

glad to hear about the PQ. i hang around AVS forums a lot so, i’ve heard lotsa good things about this TV. damn, a 37″ LCD HDTV for a computer monitor, how the heck am i gonna match this…. all i bought this month was a bag of Skittles XD

enjoy the new tv, my friend. it looks gorgeous! until we meet again, on our respective quests towards bankruptcy ^_^

  18. Arcueid on 6/8/2007 at 7:31 am

Damn, i cant get it out of my head… im proberbly gonna end up getting a 37″ myself now T_T, my 24″ feels so small, and buying the dell 30″ will end up more expensive since ill need a new GPU…
i should change my nick to MoyJr. -.-
