2 Hours Idoling

So I finally switched to Vista. Honestly it’s not that bad of an OS but man it really kills the computer. For example, mkv at 720p I used to be able to play in WinXP are now sluggish in Vista, which wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the fact a lot of new releases (i.e. CODE Geass R2) are at 720p-ish. Annoying but I’ll deal.

Beside that, I’ll have to admit at least Vista is pretty looking ;)

Why the switch? Basically to force myself to learn Vista for work plus I figured it was about time I see what the big deal was. Initially I was going to do dual boot with WinXP and Vista but that didn’t happen due to various reasons. For one, doing the install almost hosed my C drive that I didn’t backup. Luckily after everything was said and done, I was able to at least grab all the data off the old WinXP C partition before I decided to just hose it and do Vista only… which was a pain in itself due to trying figure out why it wouldn’t continue to install after the initial copy (eventually figured it was because of my SATA drive/controller that I temporarily disabled while the install went). Pretty much spent Friday night (how sad) and the majority of Saturday finishing up the install and getting everything how I liked it, which was great for a bit…

… until I found out I had some spyware trojans already! I won’t go into details but getting cracked programs finally got the better of me. Many hours were spent trying to get rid of everything but eventually, ended up formatting the C drive and starting again. This was at 8PM on Sunday with work the following day, so much to say I probably did the quickest install ever all in about 2 hours. And I’m not just talking the Vista install, I mean re-doing all the programs, settings, configurations, etc that I initially spent over 10 hours on before. Pretty crazy right?

Much to say, my weekend was wasted due to Vista and bad luck. Thankfully at least now *knock on wood* everything is good and running fine… minus 720p mkv videos, but I guess that’s something I’m going to have to live with until I upgrade some parts or just build another system. Hopefully, I’ll do the former cheaper method first before going all out and spending money I don’t have ;)

And of course with a new install comes a new wallpaper, in part to honor our id@lmaster guru DiGiKerot, I found this lovely wall somewhere on the ‘net. Go ask him for more information on the girl and the game while I crash for the night k? Thanks!

kowai sou. Well, I havent been though this sort of Vista ordeal, but I tell you, I’m loving UbuntuStudio64 on this 3000+ single core, which isnt very fast but 720p is fluid. mplayer also yields nice mouse-click single-frame or “machine gun” style frame snapping.

I would have installed it on my dual-core system, but the only thing it lagged on was 1080p; I end up not using the dual-core system now… oh wells ^^

sweet, april wallpaper cometh!
well, tough that you gotta live without 720p on that slick monitor of yours, but still, sp 1 is coming out right? i heard it addresses vistas overuse of processing power in certain areas.. might free up some power to run those videos XD

Try installing CoreAVC codec for the h264 encodes.
My system spec is Core Duo 2GHz/2G RAM/X1900XT on Vista (been using it since release) and I can run 1080p on my 24inch Dell no probs.

Switched to Vista when I got this computer. AFter having some trouble with the sounddrivers everything now runs smooth as silk.

I tend to have few to no problems at all now. Which is really good.

Watching 720p is also a charm. Espacially now when I got this monitor :)

Nice wallpaper, as always. Hope everything works out for you. Buying a new comp in pieces and assembling it yourself isn´t that expensive now, atleast not here. But the feeling of unpacking everything and then putting everything together is really good.

What’s your system stats? If it’s at least more than 2 years old… I’m not too surprised if Vista runs rather slow. I suggest disabling the visual themes and unnecessary system processes like Indexing (for the Vista search) and other system policies related stuff, if your not gonna use it.

Also… getting Vista and XP to dual boot each other DOES entail having to go through some scary parts, most likely I suspect the first time you tried to install, Vista screwed up your NTDLR because it tries to overwrite it with it’s own. I am running an Vista/XP dual boot system (heck, dual PC even) and it does take some special steps to make it work.

As for the 720p, try to get CoreAVC like houkoholic says. It’s a wonderful piece of coding for the slower PC’s. And the trojans… leave UAC on? :D

I’m still fighting nasty Nvidia/Vista issues on an XPS that I have at work. Lovely display driver constantly crashes. However I’ve been using Ultimate on my laptop for the last year without too many problems. If half of my network stuff at work would run properly on Linux I’d switch there like I have at home though :)

I said the same about Vista, but ultimately it was the dearth of good looking custom msstyles that did me in. I’m back on XP, and I’m not looking back.

Ryan A, sounds like an interesting setup. Always wanted to get into non-Windows OSes but just don’t have the patience for it.

Aeldt, already have SP1 installed. I tried some of the ideas given by others which helped a bit but the video to subs sync are still off every once in awhile =/

shuin0120, Vista isn’t too bad. Haven’t really had the time to plan around with it but it is what it is. And np about the wallpaper, that’s why the “screens” section of my blog exist!

houkoholic, ah thanks for the tip. CoreAVC did help a bit but like I mentioned, sub and video are still off sync depending on the action happening. Most likely at this point it’s just my hardware specs (AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.8GHz, 1.5GIG RAM, and GeForce 7600GT). Probably will do some upgrading in the summer I guess.

manga, good to hear everything is working fine for you in Vista. Minus the video/sub sync issue on 720p videos it’s pretty good so far. And yea, I know buying new PC parts isn’t that expensive just a cost I didn’t plan on (LOL not like that’s any different from when I order anime merchandise either)

Kurogane, took your advice which I was eventually going to do (just way too lazy to). Minus taking off all the VS stuff (I do like the transplant glass crap) took what I could, which helped a little. *shrugs* oh well. And yea, dual boot should be easy but good old microsoft just doesn’t let that happen. Funny thing is I did dual boot on my dell 700m like nothing. Hahaha on UAC… I’m not THAT much of a n00b dang it :P

kiryuu, I see I see. Dell’s XPS laptop right? Lovely thing as long as you can get everything working (Vista should be fine last I hear, just going back to XP issues come up).

ritchan, LOL yea XP is a pretty solid OS after all these years. At least more stable than Vista since by now, 90% of all XP issues are documented somewhere on these interwebs ;)

kiryuu Says: April 8th, 2008at 9:41 pm

actually an XPS 720 desktop, laptop is an inspiron 9400. sad thing on the desktop is my office has 7, and only mine and one other guy’s don’t work + dell support is worthless on the issue ^^;

moyism Says: April 8th, 2008at 10:24 pm

kiryuu gotcha. Dell support is ONLY good to replace parts if you know what to say ;)

kiryuu Says: April 8th, 2008at 10:55 pm

pretty much. :D

Kurogane Says: April 9th, 2008at 2:13 am

Hmm, looking at your system specs, Vista’s definitely gonna run a bit slow on it. I suppose that’s why the 720p vids are lagging.

The best way to improve performance would be to add another stick of RAM, maybe get another 1 gig for it. It does make a world of difference with Vista. I really recommend nothing less than 2GB for Vista myself. Anything below is definitely pushing it a bit.

Anyways, try it out for a while. Vista may run slow at first, but after it learns your habits via Super Prefetching, all your normal programs should run pretty fast. It did for me.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, if you have a particualarly good 1GB thumbdrive lying around, try using it for Ready Boost. Don’t use it if it doesn’t pass the Ready Boost test though, even if there’s hacks for it, I didn’t seem to notice any performance increase when I tried it with my cheap Kingston DT100.

question about the foobar2000

i think my foobar is on latest version but i dont see an option that the same as the that T_T can someone tell me how?

kyouray Says: April 9th, 2008at 7:15 pm

Many people told me that vista is bad but I don’t have serious problems. Maybe because my laptop’s recent. I had just one little problem with a dating sim : sound didn’t work.

Flame_Haze Says: April 10th, 2008at 9:28 pm

Talk about a massive hassle for you to switch! Why does your work even use Vista? I’m using Vista SP1 on my dual core laptop and I do have problems sometimes with crazy weird crashes >_> I have got bsod a few times, and had to restart explorer.exe before. I have some things to recommend now that you made the switch^^
For XP and Vista there’s a Task Manager replacer called Process Explorer(free).

I highly recommend using a Start Menu replacement called “Vista Start Menu”(free) it works on XP as well lol. Its worth searching for the pro version…

The best application launcher for windows is likely Launchy 2.0(free). It works by hitting alt + spacebar it then brings up a launch bar that indexes your files and you just type in the name and tap enter to launch off. Corny XD.
For Codec stuff I like the Vista Codec Pack and who knows it may solve your problems but I wouldn’t count on that.

I personally like using the windows sidebar and it appears that you don’t. I put widgets like my gmail checker, c/p history list, application launcher, and a widget that has shutdown, restart etc. buttons on it.

I’m hopeful you can find a solution to those episodes playing but I’m guessing that its your processor causing the problem…

Nagato Says: April 16th, 2008at 2:39 am

As Kurogane said, you’ll need more RAM. Vista eats RAM like no other.
Some other ‘features’ you might want to find and disable are UAC, and maybe some features of Windows Defender.
Needless to say, I used Vistaids for about half a year before I ‘upgraded’ back to XP.

kamikaze Says: April 22nd, 2008at 8:57 pm

hey could you tell me how you made your foo bar like that?
i want mine to do that too! >

moyism Says: April 22nd, 2008at 10:29 pm

Nagato, aahh the “fun” of Vista XD

kamikaze, basically you need to download Panel UI for your foobar and get the skin elegance.
